Book Editing Services:

Developmental Editing

A developmental edit, or substantive edit, is one of my  book editing services. It takes a look at the big picture of your manuscript. I take an in-depth look at your manuscript and provide you with in-manuscript suggestions and a report detailing the strengths and weaknesses. I address issues and concerns with literary elements like overall theme(s), plot, or story arc, characters and character development, pacing, style and flow, dialogue, setting, point of view, voice.  A developmental edit helps you create a story that teens and young adults won’t want to put down.

My Process: I read your manuscript through once, taking notes as I read. Oftentimes, this allows me to see problems resolve. Then, I read through a second time. This time, I utilize Track Changes to offer detailed feedback and suggestions throughout. I follow a systematic 3-step approach. I detail the developmental issue I see. I note the reason it may be problematic. Then I give ideas for changes.  Additionally, I provide you with a detailed, custom, multi-page report that focuses on the manuscript’s strengths and weaknesses. You receive honest, helpful, and constructive feedback with examples for improvement taken directly from your manuscript. When I complete the manuscript, I send it back to you. You choose which suggestions to apply and how to apply them.

Book Editing Services:

Manuscript Evaluation

An in-depth look at your young adult or new adult manuscript. Sometimes it’s referred to as a developmental editing report. This type of evaluation looks at: overall theme(s), plot, or story arc, characters and character development, pacing, style and flow, dialogue, setting, point of view, voice. This is a lighter version of my developmental edit book editing service.

My Process: First, I read your manuscript taking detailed notes as I read. Then, I write a detailed multi-page report that focuses on the manuscript’s strengths and weaknesses. I provide honest, helpful, and constructive feedback with examples for improvement. Provided examples come directly from your manuscript. Finally, I guide you with suggested next steps. You choose which suggestions to apply and how to apply them.

Book Editing Services:

Line Editing

Line editing delves into the paragraph and sentence level. It polishes the style and flow of your work. When line editing, I often break up run-on sentences, create a variety of sentence types, or identify patterns that may trip up your reader. This type of editing is helpful so that your reader remains engaged with the story.

My Process: First, I read or listen to your manuscript aloud. I listen to the flow of the words and the structure of the sentences in combination. Making note of areas that feel heavy or rushed, I  return to adjust the wording. Then, I read through a second time. This time, I utilize Track Changes to make suggested edits and offer feedback throughout. I always include honest, helpful, and kind feedback so that you understand the changes I suggest. I send your manuscript back once I complete the editing process. You choose which suggestions to apply and how to apply them.  As always, you retain control of which edits are applied and which are not.

Book Editing Services:

Copy Editing

During this process I correct the errors that distract teen and young adult readers from your story. A technical edit allows your reader to focus on the plot line and characters.

My Process: First, I create a custom style sheet that is used to ensure accuracy and consistency from beginning to end. Then I begin the technical editing process. I check for and correct errors in spelling, punctuation, grammar, word formatting, and syntax. I offer comments and suggestions throughout the manuscript. I also check and correct consistency in formatting throughout. I utilize Track Changes to correct errors and utilize professional editing software. Using this combined approach ensures consistency and accuracy from beginning to end.

    Young Adult Novel

    Book Editing Services:

    Proofreading

Proofreading is the last set of eyes before publication. Your writing should have been read and/or edited multiple times before this stage. It is common for people to assume this is the service needed, when in fact they need a light copyedit with proofread. Young adult readers expect that your novel will be essentially error-free.

My Process: First, I manually proofread your manuscript, paying special attention to consistency, accuracy, and egregious errors that may have been missed or introduced during other editing stages. I utilize Track Changes to correct errors in spelling, punctuation, grammar, word formatting, and syntax. I also utilize professional editing software to assist me in ensuring consistency and accuracy from beginning to end.
